Lacy: "Pythios giving up on me best thing ever"

Written by Pterodromae Cahow at 11:26 1/6-2017

At the start of Season 41 Pterodromae Cahow veteran Sidney Lacy announced his retirement. The 35-year-old hill sprinter was one of the most successful riders in divisions 3-5 and played a significant part in the Storm Petrels' advance to the world's top-100. Lacy is mostly known for his uncanny ability to break away from the peloton at the right time.

BermuDailyTV asked Lacy about his impressive list of results and the relation between him and his manager, Pythios. Said Lacy: "Pythios always saw the adventurer in me. As a youngster, I always want to attack a stage, to ride ahead of the peloton and just to see what happens. It didn't matter too much for me if we stayed ahead. I just figured, you know, you win some, you lose some. But then Pythios put me on an intensive training regiment and instructed me to get into the breakaway all the time. I just couldn't do it. Not like that..."

After a brief silence, during which he mentally revisited what obviously was a painful moment in his career, Lacy continued: "At some point Pythios just gave up on me. He no longer told me to get into the breakaway, but he'd just let me decide for myself how I rode my races. That was exactly what I needed. I was no longer bound by instructions, but I was on my own and I could decide for myself when to jump away. I was finally free, and as long as I felt I was free, I could do anything."

The rest, as they say, is history. Lacy would go on to set a team record of 27 results, evenly divided over first, second, and third places. Lacy, who has been a loyal Storm Petrel throughout his entire career, plans to remain associated with Pterodromae Cahow as a trainer after his retirement, teaching his unique set of skills to a new generation: "breaking away is not about quality. It's all about timing. If you have a good sense for what's going on, then no matter how well you climb or ride on those cobbles, you can get away from the field. I believe that's something every rider can learn."

We here at BermuDailyTV wish Sidney Lacy all the best in his training career and we hope to see many Storm Petrels soar ahead of the peloton in the seasons to come. Even if only because it makes for good TV.
